It's sweeping! But anything where you get expressions like this and people slipping around on the ice like they are those kids with wheels on their shoes is totally fair sport as far as I'm concerned.
ART: Nikki Farquharson

I love her work.

To see more of her iiiustrations, click here.

WC Loves... Anyway, it's good because I'm catching things I didn't hear him say before. He currently lives in Berlin and I asked him about it because I went last summer and one of my best friends (boo!) is moving there on Sunday. I thought she and everyone would be interested in what he had to say about the city:

"I identify with the democratic traditions of this country, right here in Germany. Whether you want to agree with it or not, Germany is setting an example for the world about the reconciliation, the reunification and what it means to try and make good. It’s inspiring, Berlin is the most forward thinking city, period, in the west. It has to be, because of the history and I like that energy, not just the art, not just the value for money. "

As sad as I am to see her go, I think this is going to be one of the most brilliant experiences she'll ever have. And I can't wait to be back there over the summer. Paris, anyone?

Stay tuned to our next issue for the full story on Anton, Berlin, and his new album Who Killed Sgt. I was working at the Sixth Ward last Saturday and didn't take much notice of the ambulances parked outside mid-day until my boss came in to tell me that Zucco, our beloved french chef/restaurateur across the street, had died of a heart attack while working that afternoon. He was such a lovely person, and we shared several mornings together listening to everything from French pop to Mozart. His restaurant and his character have become such a staple in the Lower East Side, especially on Orchard Street and it won't be the same without him.

UPDATE:
Yesterday's ceremony for Zucco was one of the most beautiful I've ever witnessed. It took place on Norfolk between Stanton and Houston, right in the neighborhood, at a beautiful old church like building. It was conducted in multiple languages since he was such an international person: Spanish, French, English. There was music, laughter, weeping. It seems he would've wanted it that way. We will miss him so much.

EVENTS: Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday, in the Western Christian calendar, is the first day of Lent and occurs forty-six days (forty days not counting Sundays) before Easter. The day derives its name from the practice of placing ashes onthe foreheads of adherents as a sign of repentance. The ashes used aretypically gathered after the Palm Crosses from the previous year's Palm Sunday are burned.

In New York, you will see several people walking around today with these marks on their forehead. I guess everyone is looking for a little repentance now and then. I'm not a religious person, and don't consider myself part of any particular faith (especially Catholicism), but I would consider myself faithful. And I like the idea of executing self-restraint in areas of weakness, it does make me feel like a stronger person when I can control my vices. But I have so many of them...

It reminds me of a New Year's resolution, which I've already broken many times over. Perhaps its a shorter term goal, 40 days isn't so long. Maybe I will give up smoking cigarettes again, for real this time with no cheats. We lovingly referred to him now as “The Jackhammer.” After sleeping with both me and my best friend, it was quickly established that he was in fact the worst lay possible. This considerate fellow liked to ask what color you’d like before he sat awkwardly at the end of the bed (hiding the monster that lies between his legs), while he tried unsuccessfully to slip on the color condom of your choice. He then barreled into you at what can only be referred to as mach speed. After the initial 45 seconds, he liked to pull out so he didn’t “go too soon.” I don’t know what was worse, the fact that he remained huddled over you during break time, or that the break repeated itself 20 seconds later. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a real ladies man – that is, if you like to pay for his breakfast the next morning.

FILM: Precious

I finally saw this the other night.

I liked it.

COMMUNITY: A Touch of Class on Manhattan Ave

I went to Manhattan Inn last night, and I loved it.

There's a dude playing ragtime on the baby grand, and the vibe was great. It was Saturday night so it was a little packed. I think it will be more of a weeknight kinda place for me.

Check it out.

632 Manhattan Ave.

Happy Valentines Day

Spread the love today, and every day.

WC Loves... For some reason looking through them makes me sad, and posting them on FB kind of finalizes the fact that vacation is over and done with. It was just such a beautiful trip and here I am back in New York in the middle of a blizzard. But I guess that's kind of beautiful, too.

Anyway, you'll have to wait to see the rest of the images when we release the upcoming issue of WC on April 1, we'll do a little expose on travel - since the "Free" issue has somehow morphed into a travel theme. What a tragedy. Apparently he hung himself in his apartment only two days after the death of his mother. My heart really goes out to those close to him and all the people involved in his work. He was a serious talent and it's unfortunate when these things go down the way they do. All hail the Queen.

Here is a mini photo tribute to some of his works. One movie I watched was the recent documentary released on Anna Wintour and her Vogue enterprise titled "September Issue."

This is the first time camera men were allowed to follow the EIC around on her daily routine, encountering everyone from celebrities to her staff to her daughter Bee Shaffer. The film was enlightening and highly entertaining for someone interested in both the editorial and fashion worlds. It was no "Devil Wears Prada" but it came scarily close. Ms. Wintour seems less like a dragon lady and more like an extremely business minded and opinionated one who is really, really busy. The film also spent a significant amount of time exploring the work of Grace Coddington, the creative director who started at American Vogue the same time as Anna. They have a bit of a competitive, sparring nature about them, both strong in their convictions about fashion and the way the magazine is presented visually - but we all know who gets the final say.

Anyway, if you're into all this crazy world, check it out.

ART: Art:21 on PBS

Fallen Child, 1989 by Sally Mann

After drowning ourselves in nearly three hours (!) of the dullness that is Lost (sidenote, I'm not a hater, I actually do like that show, but last night's drawn out episode was a downright yawn)
Marcel and I switched gears and watched a five part episode of Art:21 on PBS.
If you're a fan of art or have an interest in art of the 21st century I
would recommend checking out this show. It covers a range of styles and
calibers - from Richard Serra to Sally Mann to Matthew Barney. It gives
an interesting glimpse into their processes and inspiration, squashing
some of the grandiose ideas that everything has a deeper meaning,
sometimes art is just fun. Sometimes. It also puts the artists in their
own home-based context which makes the art that much more tangible and
